Reflecting on "Who Am I Today?" is a powerful and direct way to practice self-awareness. It's important because it creates a clear, honest snapshot of your current state, allowing you to see yourself as you are now, not as you once were or wish to be. This practice helps you clarify your identity and roles, while also solidifying your core beliefs by examining your self-perception. Considering how others see you reveals any gaps between your intention and their reality. Acknowledging your current emotions and practicing self-compassion helps you build resilience. Ultimately, this process gives you a real-time understanding of who you are, enabling you to live more authentically and make better choices.

​Instructions: Take a moment to reflect on your current state. The goal here is to describe yourself as you are right now, not who you think you should be.

  • Identity: How would you describe yourself right now? (Consider your physical self, personality, professional role, and personal roles.)

    • Example: "I'm a 45-year-old marketing manager and a mother of two. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but I'm also fiercely loyal to my friends and family. Physically, I'm working on getting back into shape after a long break."

    • Example: "I'm a college student majoring in graphic design. I'm outgoing and love meeting new people, but I can also be a little shy in big groups. I'm the oldest sibling, so I feel like I'm always looking out for my younger brother and sister."

  • Self-Perception: What is one thing you think about yourself that is fundamentally true? Why do you believe this?

    • Example: "I believe I am a resilient person. I've faced several major setbacks in my life and have always found a way to move forward and learn from the experience."

    • Example: "I believe I am a creative person. I feel most myself when I'm drawing or working on a new design project. It's something I've been doing my whole life, and I know I'm good at it."

  • External Perception: How do you believe others perceive you? Do you think this aligns with how you see yourself?

    • Example: "I think people at work see me as very competent and put-together, maybe even a little cold. I don't think that's completely aligned with how I see myself; I'm just very focused on my work and don't always show my more personal, goofy side."

    • Example: "I think my friends see me as the funny one in the group, always making jokes. I like that, but I also think I'm a good listener, and I'm not sure if that part comes across as much."

 

  • Emotions: How do you feel about your life right now, in this moment? What emotions are most present for you?

    • Example: "Right now, I feel a mix of gratitude and stress. I'm grateful for my family and my health, but I'm also feeling stressed about a big project deadline at work and a few unexpected expenses that came up."

    • Example: "I feel excited about my summer break, but also a little anxious about what's next. My dominant emotions are probably happiness and a low-level of anxiety about the future.

  • Self-Compassion: On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you like and accept yourself today? What contributes to this feeling?

    • Example: "I would say an 8. I'm proud of the progress I've made on my goals, and I've been trying to be kinder to myself when I make a mistake, which feels good."

    • Example: "Maybe a 6 today. I didn't do as well on a test as I wanted, and I've been comparing myself to my friends a bit, which makes it harder to feel good about myself."
